12.24 マレー語勉強記録
I have started studying Malay. I don’t know why I chose Malay myself, but it is easy for me to learn because of its lovely sound, the lack of tone, and the fact that it is also written in Roman characters. The reason I wanted to learn a foreign language in the first place was because I wondered why I was writing in Japanese. I happen to be Japanese, I happen to be a native Japanese speaker, and my strongest language is Japanese, but I saw no reason not to write in other languages. …… So, I wanted to try a language that was a little further away from me, although I don’t dislike English either.
Perhaps to learn Malay (or most foreign languages, for that matter), I need to be able to learn English first, so I want to translate my own work into English and Malay in the process of learning.
For now, I bought a grammar book, a vocabulary book, and “58 chapters on getting to know Malaysia". I haven’t bought a dictionary yet, but I am wondering whether I should buy a Japanese-Malaysian one or an English-Malaysian one. The latter seems to have more vocabulary in it, but I’m not sure what the best one is. Those won’t arrive until Thursday, so until then I’ve decided to take a look at the TUFS Language Module.

Today I progressed to Lesson 03. I learned personal pronouns, A’s B, A is B, negatives, questions, prepositions, etc. It’s been a while since I’ve learned a language, or rather, it’s the first time I’ve actively learned a language, so I’m looking forward to it.
I also created a Malay account on Bluesky. I haven’t figured out how to follow people who use Malay yet, but for now I looked up “bahasa Jepun” (in Japanese) and followed those who came up. Today I memorized the following sentences.
Hai, saya Yo Fujii. Saya novelis Jepun. Saya mula belajar bahasa Melayu. Matlamat utama saya ialah menulis novel dan puisi dalam bahasa Melayu.
